About 6,000 offenses connected with money laundering were identified in Russia in January-August 2005
"The financial damage from money laundering totaled 162.4 billion rubles (about $5.7 billion)," Sergei Meshcheryakov, the head of the ministry' s economic security department, said. "In this connection, 867 people have already been convicted." Viktor Zubkov, the head of the Federal Service for Fiscal Monitoring, also said that money laundering schemes had become more sophisticated and the sums involved in a few cases came to hundreds of billions rubles.
