The Russian committee for agricultural supervision said Monday it might ban some Brazilian meat imports
Sergei Dankvert, the chairman of the committee, said initial reports from the International Epizootic Bureau, an organization that deals with epidemics around the world, suggested that foot-and-mouth had been discovered in some Brazilian states bordering on Paraguay. "We are beginning consultations but avoiding any hasty decisions," Dankvert said. Under an agreement between the two countries, imports from Brazilian states affected by foot-and-mouth disease can be banned, along with imports from neighboring states, he said. "We will investigate the case and make decisions in accordance with the agreement," Dankvert said, adding that consultations with Brazil would start after Russian veterinarians received confirmation from the International Epizootic Bureau.
