A total of 40 fatalities have now been confirmed as a result of an explosion Saturday in the Taizhina coal mine, Kemerovo Region Emergency Services reported. Rescue workers continued active at the scene, where seven miners remained unaccounted for. Saturday's methane explosion took place at a depth of 560 meters. Thirteen miners were brought to the surface alive. An investigation into what caused the blast is underway under the leadership of the Kemerovo Region prosecutor, Aleksandr Khalezin, and the deputy prosecutor of the Siberian Federal Territory, Valentin Simuchenkov. Rescue efforts at the scene were under the direct control of the Kemerovo Region governor, Aman Tuleyev. He was reporting to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Aleksey II, at the president's request, offered a special prayer for the rescue of any remaining trapped miners during the Easter service.
