Russia's Economic Development and Trade Ministry intends to keep its current quotas on meat imports until 2009
Russia's Economic Development and Trade Ministry intends to keep its current quotas on meat imports until 2009, the minister said Wednesday at the end of a meeting with heads of Latin American diplomatic missions in Moscow. German Gref said the meat import quota mechanism had already been approved and would remain in force until 2009 without plans for revision. After 2009, Gref said, everything would depend on the outcome of negotiations within the World Trade Organization on reducing government support for agriculture, i.e., the decision other countries would make on cutting their subsidies to domestic agricultural producers. The value of annual EU meat imports to Russia is currently about 1.3 billion euros. EU imports are expected to account for 80 % of the total beef import quota of 457,500 metric tons (an increase of 2 % from last year) and half of the 467,400-ton pork quota (+4 %).
