Moscow's Zamoskvoretsky court on Wednesday sanctioned the arrest of deputy head of the loan organizations department of the Federal Tax Service
Moscow's Zamoskvoretsky court on Wednesday sanctioned the arrest of deputy head of the loan organizations department of the Federal Tax Service /FNS/ Oleg Alexeyev, accused of taking a one-million-dollar bribe from a commercial bank. The criminal case was opened on the strength of the statement by Alexei Ivashchenko, chairman of the board of directors of the bank "Rossiisky Kapital." The court agreed with the investigators that Alexeyev, due to his position, is well connected at law-enforcement bodies and can put pressure on witnesses and influence the probe. The court's statement noted that the investigators have evidence that the official "threatened bankers with various unfavorable consequences, including criminal punishment and even bankruptcy." Alexeyev's lawyers insisted that their client is not involved in the crime and has no intention to hide from investigators. The lawyers can appeal against the decision sanctioning the arrest within three days. Alexeyev,28, was detained at Balchug Kempinski Moscow Hotel on October 17 by agents of the Federal Security Service and the FNS' internal security department. The court is now considering an arrest warrant for leading legal adviser of the Moscow department of the Central Bank of Russia Alexei Mishin, who is a second suspect in the bribery case
