Russia's State Duma holds hearings on the role of mass media in maintaining the cultural values in society
Russia's State Duma, the lower house of parliament, holds hearings on the role of mass media in maintaining the cultural values in society and shaping up ideals and morality. Members of parliament, top officials from a number of federal and regional agencies and organizations, arts and media professionals have been invited to attend the hearings. "An average Russian doesn't see the picture of life in his own country in its entirety, as the flood of distressing reports in Moscow-based mass media intensifies mistrust in the institutes of state power and leaves moral and psychological void in people's minds," said members of the Duma committee for culture. "Information about all things bad heavily outweighs reporting on encouraging process in our social life and economy if you take central TV channels," they said, implying the crucial role that television plays in Russia as an instrument of informing the public. MPs believe that " the government's policy in mass media must aim to strengthen national unity, foster patriotic feelings and civic consciousness in people, disseminate the values of genuine culture, and shape up ideals and morality." The conference is expected to recommend a number of bills helping mass media to promote the values of genuine culture and ensure Russia's security in the field of mass communications.
