Petersburg court to begin trial on merits of Starovoitova’s case
The St. Petersburg city court will begin the trial on the merits of the criminal case on killing Duma deputy of the second convocation Galina Starovoitova on Monday. Contract killers murdered her on November 21 1998. Six people will face trial. Investigators of the Petersburg Federal Security Service department set out a lead that there are ten accused people in the case and other four are being searched for. Investigators believe that the six defendants are perpetrators and masterminds of the crime, the murder customer is being established. Preliminary hearings preceded the trial on the merits. During preliminary hearings the defendants sought considering the case by jury, but their request was denied. The case is considered in the usual court make-up at open sessions. Under article 277 of the Russian Criminal Code for an attempt on life of a state or public figure the defendants will face a long term in prison up to life imprisonment if their guilt is proved.
