Russian President Vladimir Putin said relations with India are at an unprecedented high level
Russian President Vladimir Putin said relations with India are at an unprecedented high level. "Political contacts have practically never ceased," Putin said at a meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh on Thursday. The head of the Russian state underlined that the visit by India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be a key event of the year. "We are preparing for this visit," the president said. The meeting between the Indian foreign minister and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov and Cabinet officials will be a considerable contribution to preparing the upcoming visit, Putin noted. The president thanked Singh for taking part in the session of the Council of Prime Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. On Wednesday, Singh held talks with the Russian co-chairman of the Indian-Russian intergovernmental economic cooperation commission. The Indian minister told Putin that the Wednesday meeting had been fruitful as the parties discussed a broad range of issues and reached consensus on a majority of them. The discussion of economic issues was one of the most successful, Singh said. The Indian diplomat conveyed to Putin regards from the Indian prime minister, president, and Sonia Ghandi. The Indian premier is looking forward to the visit to Russia, Singh said, thanking Putin for a warm welcome and hospitality. Taking part in the talks were Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov, presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alexeyev, Russian Ambassador to India Vyacheslav Trubnikov, and Indian Ambassador to Russia Kanwal Sibal.
