Three members of a Moscow-based organized criminal group have been detained for extorting 1.5 million euros from a British company
Three members of a Moscow-based organized criminal group have been detained for extorting 1.5 million euros from a British company, a law-enforcement official said Friday. The culprits, two of whom are unemployed and one is a professor at the Federal Tax Service Academy, were caught accepting a check from high-ranking staffers of a British advertising firm in the lobby of the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Moscow, the source said. An investigation has established that the detainees, belonging to the Taganskaya crime ring, extorted the money from the firm from August to October of this year, threatening the "destruction of its [the firm's] assets and the spread of incriminating evidence about it through the mass media," the official said.
