Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to consider the funding of a World War II memorial from the state budget
Volgograd region governor Nikolai Maksyuta underlined at a meeting with the president that it is inexpedient to invest money into the construction of a new memorial complex. "The Pobeda /Victory/ organizing committee raised the issue of keeping the Mamayev Kurgan memorial complex. Today, the administration took up the maintenance of both Mamayev Kurgan and the panoramic scene of the Stalingrad Battle. This load is unbearable for us," Maksyuta said. Monuments of federal significance should be funded from the federal budget. "I've been telling it everybody for three years; but no headway has been made," he added. Next year allocations for the maintenance of the Mamayev Kurgan memorial, built in 1967, reach 25 million roubles.
