Alu Alkhanov:"The criminal situation in the republic remains rather difficult, although law-enforcement bodies control it"
Chechen President Alu Alkhanov said "the criminal situation in the republic remains rather difficult, although law-enforcement bodies control it." "The general criminal situation is difficult; regrettably, terrorist attacks, bomb blasts, murders and abductions happen. The statistics for kidnappings show that they have not decreased. This situation is of serious concern to the whole leadership of the republic," Alkhanov underlined t a conference with the heads of law-enforcement bodies in the Chechen capital on Monday. He said not all crimes are registered, which is proven by discrepancies in reports filed by police and military commandant's offices. "It appears we don't have an accurate estimate of the situation in the republic and it worries us, too," Alkhanov said. Chechnya's Interior Ministry reported 335 crimes in the republic in October, down by 50 from the same period last year. Of those, 142 crimes have been solved. Police found and destroyed in October three camps and 20 shelters of militants, and confiscated 116 kilograms of explosives and a large amount of weapons and ammunition. The number of violent crimes in which firearms were used, reached 59 in October, a two-fold decrease from October 2004.
