Georgian Rustavi-2 television hit by explosion, no casualties
Police officers have found the grenade launcher believed by the investigation to have been used to launch an attack on Rustavi-2 television studio early on Monday. The grenade launcher was spotted approximately 200 metres from the high-rise building where the Tbilisi independent television is housed. Rustavi-2 showed the abandoned launcher in its live broadcast. Georgian State Security Minister Valery Khaburzania made a statement to the effect that “those who launched the attack on Rustavi-2 television are thus trying to bring destabilisation into the country.” He said that he had already talked to the television leadership about the incident and promised that security will be enhanced at the building. The minister recommended, in particular, installing surveillance cameras in the high-rise building for round-the-clock observation of the adjoining territory. Khaburzania said that the state security ministry would carry out investigation into the grenade launcher attack. Preliminary information suggests that criminal proceedings have been instituted in connection with an act of sabotage.
