TransTeleKom and China Unicom have announced the official opening of a new transcontinental land-based fiber-optic communications link between Europe and Asia
TransTeleKom, a subsidiary of RZhD, Ulan-Bator Railways and China Unicom have announced the official opening of a new transcontinental land-based fiber-optic communications link between Europe and Asia, the press office of RZhD has announced. Industry predictions are for the market in telecommunications traffic between Europe and Asia to reach USD 4 billion by 2007. Currently, such communications use two basic routes-an undersea cable through the Red Sea and around Asia, or through the United States, the favored route. The seabed cable is costly, hard to repair and not as reliable as land-based systems, the press office said. Both current routes are more than 20,000 kilometers long, which is a problem for time-sensitive traffic such as video conferences and some bank- and finance-related communications. The new transcontinental land route is half the length of its predecessor routes, which will shorten the signal delay between the two main telecommunications centers of London and Hong Kong considerably.
