A delegation of the Council of Europe arrived in Chechnya
A delegation of the Council of Europe arrived in Chechnya on Wednesday for meeting the leaders of the Chechen Republic and for working out a mechanism of rendering financial assistance in the restoration and development of public health and educational institutions. The delegation includes Mark Franco, official representative of the European Commission in Russia, Anthony Brenton, British ambassador to Russia, and Martin Vukovic, Austrian ambassador to Russia. Anthony Brenton told journalists in Grozny that they were willing to promote the development of the republic, and the sum the European Union is going to allocate for that purpose was going to be large. According to his information, EU has decided already to allocate 20 million euros for financing social programmes in three republics of the Northern Caucasus –Chechnya, Ingushetia and North Ossetia. On Wednesday the delegation visited in Grozny Maternity Home No. 2, Boarding School No. 8 and the republican hospital for children. Aside from it, members of the delegation visited the Chechen electoral commission, where they met representatives of eight regional branches of the political parties, whose electoral lists have been registered for participation in the parliamentary elections, due to be held on November 27. The delegation is going to meet Chechen President Alu Alkhanov on Wednesday. The delegation visited North Ossetia on Tuesday and met Ossetian President Taimuraz Mamsurov there. On Thursday the delegation will visit Ingushetia. The British ambassador came to Chechnya for the first time after 1998, when four British specialists died a horrible death there. Britain will hold a rotating presidency in EU until December 31 and will be replaced on that post by Austria.
