A new wave of bird flu has hit the Chelyabinsk region, the southern Urals, the local center of the Emergency Situations Ministry said Monday. "A total of 12 birds died in a local village last Thursday," a spokesman for the center said. "According to the regional veterinary laboratory, one of 12 specimens taken from the dead birds contained the bird flu virus." At present, 148 fowl have died in the village, and 98 have been culled. In all, local households keep about 850 fowl, the spokesman said. Medical examinations have not discovered any human bird flu cases, the spokesman said.
