Russia is in the mood of joining WTO in the second half of 2006
Russia is in the mood of joining the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in the second half of 2006, Minister for Economic Development and Trade Gherman Gref told Itar-Tass on Thursday after his meeting with Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Toshihiro Nikai. “2006 is an optimistic and realistic time limit,” Gref stated. “This could happen in the middle of the year, which is the most optimistic version, or before the end of 2006,” he noted. The two ministers discussed the bilateral documents related to Russia’s accession to WTO, which are expected to be approved during President Vladimir Putin’s official visit to Japan, scheduled for November 20-22. “We have agreed on all the points and the agreement with Japan on Russia’s accession to WTO will be signed during the Russian leader’s visit to Japan,” he stated. Gref came to Japan from the South Korean port city of Busan, where he took part in the work of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum. He discussed there with his colleagues from the United States, South Korea and several other countries the work to draw up agreements on the conclusion of the talks on Russia’s accession to WTO. The Russian side described the meetings as successful. It was possible to agree with the United States on the schedule of talks for the remaining period of the year. The Peruvian Minister of External Trade and Tourism Alfredo Ferrero signed a protocol on the terms of Russia’s accession to WTO relative to commodities.
