Junichiro Koizumi believes the plan to build an export oil pipeline to the Pacific coast of Russia “is of strategic importance for both countries”
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi believes the plan to build an export oil pipeline to the Pacific coast of Russia “is of strategic importance for both countries”. He expressed this view at the joint press conference with President Vladimir Putin, which was held here after the end of the Tokyo negotiations. “The oil pipeline is important not only for Russia, but for Japan, too. It meets the interests of both countries,” the premier stressed. The leaders of the two countries have agreed to promptly thrash out all the problems linked with cooperation in this project. “We have also agreed to step up our contacts at all levels, including the preparations for Russian Premier Mikhail Fradkov’s visit to Japan,” he noted. The Japanese premier also stressed the importance of cooperation with Russia in view of the fact that Russia will host the next G-8 summit, which will be held at St. Petersburg in 2006.
