The Russian Prosecutor General's Office sent to court the criminal case over the murder of Paul Khlebnikov
The Russian Prosecutor General's Office sent to court the criminal case over the murder of Paul Khlebnikov, editor-in-chief of the Russian version of the Forbes magazine, a prosecutor told Itar-Tass on Monday. Khlebnikov was gunned down on July 9, 2004. Investigators tracked the crime to a group of Chechen nationals. It included Kazbek Dukuzov, his brother Magomed Dukuzov, Musa Vakhayev, and Magomed Edilsultanov. Chechnya resident Khozh-Akhmed Nukhayev paid the group to kill the editor. Just two members of the group will stand trial: Kazbek Dukuzov and Musa Vakhayev. The other gang members are still at large. According to the investigators, the criminals ganged up in 2002 in Moscow, to commit crimes of extortions and contract hits. The gangsters were also involved in the murder of former deputy Chechen prime minister Yan Sergunin on June 25, 2004 and attempted murder of businessman Alexei Pichugin, robbery and extortions. Dukuzov and Vakhayev were detained in Minsk on October 17, 2004. They were changed under several counts, including contract hits, extortion, robbery, and participation in a criminal group. Moscow-based notary Fail Sadretdinov who investigators said had shopped a contract on Pichugin, will also stand trial. Nukhayev, the mastermind behind the murder of Khlebnikov, is on the wanted list. Some reports said he had ordered to kill Khlebnikov for the latter's critical remarks in the book called Talk with a Barbarian. Paul Khlebnikov was buried in New York. He is survived by his wife and three children.
