The Russian army will have 182 new tanks T-90 in 2006
The Russian army will have 182 new tanks T-90 in 2006, a spokesman of the Federal Service for the Defence Order said in an interview with Tass on Tuesday. “In compliance with an adopted decision, all the new armour, numbering 31 tanks T-90, is expected to be received by the second Taman Motorized Division of the Moscow Military District,” he noted. “Taking into account the fact that the Land Troops are now equipped, among other things, with 151 tanks T-90, the total number of these advanced vehicles in our army will reach 182 units in 2006,” the spokesman added. He reported that at least half of 125 armoured carriers to be purchased for the Land Troops in 2006, would be BTR-70s. “Advanced engines with higher driving power, used for BTR-80s, will be installed on these vehicles as well as on older BTR-60s.” “Taking into account the fact that the body of the BTR-70 eclipses its successor BTR-80 in strength and reliability of its layout, it is evident that BTR- 70s will make up half of armoured carriers which will be received by the Land Troops in 2006,” the spokesman continued. Incidentally, the price of one BTR-80 is at least twice as high as that of the BTR-70. He stated that the Land Troops have around 6,000 BTR-70s and BTR-60s at their bases and depots. “This is an inexhaustible reserve for updating our armour for many years ahead,” the spokesman stressed.
