Russia's marines mark the 300th anniversary of their force
On November 27, 1705, Peter the Great issued a decree on formation a regiment of marine soldiers, and it is believed to be the date of the Marine Corps formation. More than 40 brigades of marines participated in fighting on fronts during World War II. In the 1990s, units of marines from the Northern, Baltic and Pacific Fleets participated in operations to restore constitutional order in Chechnya. Russian Navy Commander in Chief Vladimir Masorin has congratulated the marines on the jubilee. The title of Hero of Russia was conferred on 21 marines, and orders and medals were awarded to more than 6,000. Meetings took place in the Navy Club and the Central Russian Army Theatre in Moscow on the eve of the jubilee. Ceremonies were also held in divisions and units of marines of the Northern, Baltic and Pacific Fleets. Traditional meetings with veterans, ceremonies and military and sport shows will be held at marine bases. The centre of the celebration in the city of Baltiisk will be Baltic Glory Square where ceremonies and performances will take place, and the festivities will be concluded with fireworks. Sailors will lay flowers at the memorial to marines in Vladivostok.
