The status of the peacekeeping troops operating on the CIS territory is in the focus of attention of a meeting of the CIS Council of Defence Ministers
The status of the peacekeeping troops operating on the CIS territory is in the focus of attention of a meeting of the CIS Council of Defence Ministers, which was opened here on Wednesday. “Seven defence ministers (from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Russia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine) are taking part in the meeting. The military delegations of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are led by deputy defence ministers. Moldova, Georgia and Turkmenistan did not send their delegations to the meeting,” a representative of the Russian military delegation told Itar-Tass. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov, who spoke at the opening ceremony, said that “this year we did not stick to the tradition of holding meetings of the CIS Council of Defence Ministers in the premises of the staff for the coordination of military cooperation of the CIS member countries. This time the meeting is being held in the premises of the celebrated Military Academy of the General Staff. Every member of the CIS Council of Defence Ministers is connected with the Academy in this or that way.” Vladimir Rushailo, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee and CIS Executive Secretary, praised in his report the effectiveness of the Council and described it as “one of the effectively working CIS bodies.” Rushailo called the attention of the meeting to two problems they are going to discuss. “One of them is the problem of financial support for the reforming of the CIS Staff for the Coordination of Military Cooperation and the transfer of its functions to the secretariat of the Council of Defence Ministers. The second one deals with the allocation of money for financing the creation of the CIS Unified Air Defence System,” Rushailo said. “There are 20 items on the agenda of the meeting,” the representative of the Russian military delegation told Itar-Tass.
