A cyclone hovering over Russia’s Sakhalin Island has left parts of the cities as well as six settlements without electricity
A cyclone hovering over Russia’s Sakhalin Island has left parts of the cities of Nevelsk, Chekhov and Tomari as well as six settlements without electricity. There is no communication with five other settlements. Power lines have been damaged by sticking wet snow, the press service of the regional department of the Ministry for Emergency Situations has reported. Rescuers dug 21 vehicles out of snow on the highway from Yuzhno-Salkalinsk to the port city of Nevelsk. No one was injured. An avalanche danger exists in mountains of the Sakhalin Island. Snow has smothered eight districts in the central and southern parts of Sakhalin. The influence of the cyclone is getting stronger in the northern part of the island, where snowdrifts have started and gusts of wind reach the speed of up to 30 meters per second. The cyclone will be hovering over the Sakhalin and Kurile islands till December 2, Sakhalin meteorologists have reported.
