All the three GLONASS units have been brought to the Baikonur cosmodrome
All the three GLONASS /global navigation satellite system/ units have been brought to the Baikonur cosmodrome. The satellites will be put into orbit by one booster rocket on December 25, an official told Itar-Tass on Friday. "Intensive work has been launched at the cosmodrome to prepare for the launch. On Friday, specialists began to check the accelerator unit of the Proton-K booster," the official from the Roskosmos federal space agency said. The launch will bring the number of the GLONASS units in orbit to 17. The GLONASS system requires 18 spacecraft. Russia intends to expand the GLONASS cluster with GLONASS-M units, with a service life of seven years, and GLONASS-K which will function for ten years. The use of modern equipment will supply navigation data to military and civilian users in any point of the globe and enhance the accuracy of pinpointing the coordinates of moving and static objects, Roskosmos said.
