December 6 and 7 have been declared days of mourning
December 6 and 7 have been declared days of mourning for 14 victims of the accident, in which the roof of a swimming pool collapsed in the town of Chusovoi in the Ural Mountains’ Perm region. State flags fly at half-mast and memorial services take place at local churches and mosques. Ten children and four women were killed when the snow-covered concrete roof of the swimming pool collapsed onto parents and children at noon on Sunday. The ten dead children were aged from three to 13. Eleven people were hospitalized with different injuries. Rescuers looked for survivors under the debris throughout the night. About 300 rescuers, firefighters and ambulance service medics took part in the search-and-rescue operation. The funerals of six victims are held in Chusovoi on Tuesday. Six more people will be buried there on Wednesday. Two little girls will be buried in their home settlement of Lysva. The Perm region prosecutor’s office has instituted criminal proceedings and launched an investigation led by the deputy prosecutor general of the Volga Federal District, Sergei Gerasimov. Investigators look into documents on the construction of the swimming pool and its upkeep as well as question eyewitnesses and officials.
