The contracts on the construction of a pipeline and a gas processing complex open a new page in Russian-Syrian cooperation
More than 200 industrial objects, which became strongholds of Syria’s independent economy, were erected in the country with the assistance of specialists from Russia and former Soviet republics, Syrian Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources Ibrahim al-Hadad told a news conference in the Syrian capital. The agreement signed by the Russian joint-stock company Stroytransgaz, the Syrian gas company and its private firms envisages the “turn-key” construction of the enterprise 70 kilometres from the city of Palmira which will process hydrocarbons from fields of the Central Syrian Plato (Abu Rabah, Kumkum, Northern Al-Fayad). Its productivity will amount to 2.2 billion cubic metres of purified gas, 23,000 of liquefied propane-butane and 233,000 tons of condensate a year. The term of realization of the project is 22 months. The 324-kilometre-long pipeline from the Syrian-Jordanian border to the city of Homs - - the centre of the oil and gas industry of Syria will be built within the same period of time. It will become a part of the big regional Arab-Gas project which delivers Egyptian gas from Al Arisha to neighbouring Arab countries and Turkey. The designed capacity of the pipeline is six million cubic metres of gas a day. As general director of the Syrian gas company Ali Abbas said, the total cost of the future objects will amount to some 370 million dollars. According to him, their putting into operation will make it possible “to strengthen the energy base of the republic and create new jobs.” The contracts were signed on the results of the international tender announced in the spring of the current year. According to president of the Russian company Viktor Lorents, Stroitransgas was lucky “due to its competitive advantages in comparison with other engineering construction companies.” In particular, as he noted, the Russian company ensures its full accompaniment of the project from the stage of designing to its concrete realization.
