Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will travel to China December 7-9 on state business, an official said Wednesday. Medvedev is heading the organizing committee for Russia's Year in China in 2006 and China's Year in Russia, a series of events designed "to raise confidence and promote understanding between the broad layers of society in the two countries and encourage cooperation in all spheres." While in China, Medvedev is expected to discuss joint preparations for the events and will be received by Chinese leader Hu Jintao. Russia and China have stepped up economic cooperation in recent years. China is one of the fastest growing economies in the world today and a leading oil consumer. Its oil-import demand is expected increase steadily in the longer-term, increasing oil imports from Russia by 5% in 2006. Oil transits from Russia to China via the former's East Siberian Railroad in the first 11 months of 2005 was up 35.8% year-on-year, exceeding 7 million metric tons. Russia is also close to finalizing an oil pipeline directly to China.
