President Vladimir Putin had a meeting with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore
President Vladimir Putin had a meeting with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore. This is his first meeting with the incumbent premier of that country. “I am very glad to meet you. Being self-critical, I deem it necessary to note that we have not made any serious steps so far to promote the relations between Russia and Singapore, which, nevertheless, are developing: businessmen are working, financial relations are developing, as well as the relations in the field of energy,” Putin stated in the course of the meeting. He thanked the Singapore premier for his attention to Russia’s plans, especially to the development of its free economic zones. “Singapore has a wealth of experience in this domain and our colleagues are meeting regularly to discuss this subject,” the president stated. “I hope these efforts will be practical, not merely consultative, and will take into account the interests of your business community in Russia,” he added. In turn, Lee Hsien Loong thanked the Russian president for their meeting despite the crammed program of Putin’s stay in Kuala Lumpur. “Our bilateral relations are developing although we have never met personally. They are developing, in particular, thanks to the regular meetings of representatives of our business circles,” the Singapore premier stated. He recalled the recent meeting of the Russian minister of economic development with his Singapore colleague and also with representatives of the business community of Singapore. “We hope our contacts and meetings will be continued and we shall get to know better the priorities and interests of Russia,” Lee Hsien Loong stated. “It will not be difficult for you to understand us in view of the interest you had evinced in the Russian language in the seventies,” Putin noted in this connection. “Yes, but then it was the Soviet Union, while now we are doing business with the Russian Federation,” the Singapore prime minister replied. “But the Russian language has not changed in any way,” the Russian president noted with a smile. At the beginning of the meeting, Putin and Lee Hsien Loong greeted each other in English, but after that the talk was continued with the help of interpreters.
