Gazprom rejected Ukraine's proposal Tuesday to gradually transition to market prices for Russian natural gas
Russian energy giant Gazprom rejected Ukraine's proposal Tuesday to gradually transition to market prices for Russian natural gas, calling it unacceptable and a tactic to draw out talks. "A proposal like this does not answer the questions of who, when and how Gazprom will be compensated for losses over this transition period. It will be possible to discuss this proposal only after the answers to these questions are given," said Sergei Kupriyanov, press secretary of the Gazprom head. Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko earlier Tuesday said Ukraine was ready to pay market prices for Russian natural gas if the increase was gradual and that he expected Russia to embrace the proposal. Yushchenko also said he was sure that the two countries would manage to find a mutually beneficial solution and warned against political speculations on the issue.
