Russia is ready to boost cooperation with Southeast Asia in the fight against terrorism
Russia is ready to boost cooperation with Southeast Asia in the fight against terrorism and in strengthening regional security, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday. "We also intend to develop closer cooperation with Asean [Association of Southeast Asian Nations] in the sphere of antiterrorism," he said during the first East Asia summit in the Malaysian capital. "In that respect, we deem it necessary to instruct our security and law enforcement bodies accordingly." Putin also said Russia was willing to contribute to strengthening the energy security of the member-countries of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. "This would mean, in particular, long-term and stable supplies of natural resources, joint projects on prospecting and deposit exploration, and the construction of oil and gas pipelines," the president said. Putin said Russia had a lot to offer its partners and expected reciprocity from the members of the emerging East Asian community. Russia has proactively been developing ties in the Asia-Pacific region in the last few years with the aim of expanding to new markets and strengthening the security of its eastern borders. The East Asia summit, which Russia is attending as a guest, has brought together 10 Asean members and regional powerhouses Japan, China, South Korea, India, and Australia and New Zealand.
