Vladimir Putin and Viktor Yushchenko have adopted a joint statement on the settlement of the Dniester problem
President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Viktor Yushchenko of Ukraine have adopted a joint statement on the settlement of the Dniester problem. “Russia and Ukraine, as guarantors of the Dniester settlement process, acclaim the resumption of the negotiations and proceed from the premise that the Dniester problem’s settlement shall be done by determining and legislatively fixing a special legal status for Dniester Region with due regard for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova,” the document says. “Ukraine and Russia appreciate the steps to further democratize the region, to strengthen the foundations of civic society and to affirm human rights and liberties there in keeping with OSCE and CE standards,” the statement notes. The sides “attach much importance to the creation of conditions for holding transparent and democratic elections to the Supreme Council of the Dniester Region with the participation of the international community”. “An important step in the context of the Ukrainian initiative “could be the institution of an international evaluation mission under OSCE aegis to analyze the situation and to draw up corresponding recommendations”, the document stresses. The text of the statement was published Thursday on the official internet-site of the Russian president.
