The construction of a dam in the Kazakevichev arm of the Amur River was completed at 6 am, Moscow time, on Wednesday
The construction of a dam in the Kazakevichev arm of the Amur River was completed at 6 am, Moscow time, on Wednesday, Russian Minister for Emergency Situations Sergei Shoigu has said. Three water inlet systems are situated there. The dam was built to prevent a chemical slick from flowing into the channel. At a State Duma session on the ecological situation in the Khabarovsk region, Shoigu said the chemical slick is expected to reach Russia’s Far Eastern city of Khabarovsk by Wednesday evening. “As of the present day, we have taken over 700 water samples, and so far the concentration of nitrobenzene in the Amur River does not exceed the norm,” Shoigu said. “We are taking all measures to prevent an emergency situation in Khabarovsk,” the minister pledged. He said over 200 tons of activated charcoal had been stored to clean the water. Four million liters of bottled water have been stored up. “Measures are taken to prevent a sizable growth of bottled water prices,” he stressed. A chemical plant explosion in China on November 13 dumped 100 tons of toxins into the northeastern China’s Sungari River, which flows into the Amur River.
