Russia is dropping production of economy cars "Oka” in July, 2006
Russia is dropping production of economy cars "Oka” in July, 2006 that are built in the city of Naberezhniye Chelny at present, director general of the Severstal Auto company Vadim Shvetsov told journalists on Thursday. That is a necessitated measure connected with the introduction of a new ecological standard "Euro-2" which the Oka does not meet at present, Shvetsov said. Around 10,000 Oka cars will be released in 2006. However, if a high market demand continues, the Oka production might be expanded, he said. At present, the auto works that produces economy cars (ZMA in the Russian abbreviations) is switching over to batch production of South Korean designed cross-country jeep “Ssang Yong Rexton” whose batch production began on Thursday. Nonetheless, the plant will continue the production of assembly units for the Oka models, Shvetsov said. In 2005, ZMA produced more than 31,000 Oka cars against 40,000 produced in 2004. At present, this model is the cheapest in Russia (around 3,000 dollars) and has the most economical gasoline consumption (no more than five liters per 100 kilometers).
