Russia and Kuwait have held a meeting of the intergovernmental commission on trading and economic cooperation
There have been no such meetings since 2002 due to differences between two countries over the settlement of Russia’s debt to Kuwait. The Russian Finance Ministry has drafted an agreement on debt payment, which allowed to resume the work of the commission, the head of the Federal Energy Agency, Sergei Oganesian said. The draft document stipulates the dates of the debt settlement and mutual commitments to Russia’s construction projects in Kuwait, Prime-Tass said. The two countries discussed the development of energy, tourism and culture cooperation, Oganesian said. The next meeting is expected to take place in early 2006. At present, bilateral trade is too tiny and makes up 5 million U.S. dollars as against 80 million U.S. dollars in 2001, he said. Oganesian believes that the resumption of intergovernmental meetings will contribute to increasing bilateral trade.
