Moscow police seized a large consignment of contraband cell phones worth 20 million dollars, the press service of the department for combating organized crime under the Russian Interior Ministry told Itar-Tass on Wednesday. In the middle of this year, police received information about a criminal ring engaging in the smuggling of cell phones into the country. Searches at the apartments of gang members found large quantities of phones, precious metals and other valuables, a police official said. In addition, one of the suspects in the case kept at his apartment bills of exchange worth two million dollars. It was the fourth case of confiscation by police of large batch of cell phones. A record batch weighing 300 tonnes was seized on August 16. On August 26, another 55 tonnes of illegal phones were seized at the Sheremetyevo airport. On November 25, customs agents in the Kaliningrad region seized 400,000 dollars of cell phones. Boxes with cell phones were ferried in a truck from one of the Baltic republics.
