Yelena Isinbayeva has won the Waterford Crystal European Athlete of the Year Trophy for 2005
Pole vault Olympic champion and world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva has won the Waterford Crystal European Athlete of the Year Trophy for 2005, the All-Russia Athletic Federation said Tuesday. Russia's Isinbayeva in July became the first woman to vault clear at 5.0m. She subsequently extended her world record by 1cm, and won the gold medal at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki. In all, she set nine world records in 2005. In September, Isinbayeva was also named the year's best track and field athlete at the 2005 World Athletics Gala in Monte Carlo. She has topped the rankings of the International Association of Athletics Federations since August 2004.
