The St. Petersburg Veterinary Scientific Research Institute for studies of poultry production has created a laboratory vaccine against bird flu
The St. Petersburg Veterinary Scientific Research Institute for studies of poultry production has created a laboratory vaccine against bird flu, Director of the St. Petersburg Institute Eduard Dzhavadov told Tass on Tuesday. The pilot vaccine against the bird flu had been developed at the institute since the second half of the 20th century. However, the research program was dropped because of the lack of funding, and experimental tests were resumed in 2005 only, the institute director said. At present, the research has been conducted at the level of clinical tests, Dzhavadov said. "There will be no sweeping vaccination of domestic birds and farm poultry against the highly pathogenic virus prior to the spring migration of wild birds; it is unnecessary for epizootic reasons," he said. Dzhavadov believes that the vaccination should be undertaken, above all, in the so- called risk zones determined according to a predicted range of the spread of the infection.
