Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has come out for an international conference on Iraq
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has come out for an international conference on Iraq involving all the country's political and ethnic forces and representatives of neighboring countries. "Opinions of all the Iraqi political and ethnic forces are important for the formation of Iraq's government. Much will depend on its neighbors, as well. So an international conference with them would be useful," Mr. Ivanov told a press conference in Minsk. According to him, this is the only way to form a really legitimate Iraqi government. Russia's position is the following: "any future government in Iraq should be acknowledged by the majority of Iraqi people", Sergei Ivanov added. Speaking about military cooperation with Belarus (Mr. Ivanov took part in the joint session of the Russian and Belarussian Defense Ministries), the Russian minister said that the contract on the supplies of the S-300 missile systems to Belarus would be signed soon. "I have no doubts of this," Sergei Ivanov said. "S-300 supplies to Belarus will help to consolidate military security and air defense systems of Russia and Belarus," the minister stressed. In his words, the Russian Defense Ministry introduces modern information military technologies used in the Russian Armed Forces to Belarussian colleagues. They can be used in the interests of the joint regional group, Mr. Ivanov noted.
