Bird flu is to be one of the focal points at the G-8 summit in Russia this year
Bird flu is to be one of the focal points at the G-8 summit in Russia this year, Russia’s chief sanitary doctor Gennady Onishchenko said here on Tuesday. Onishchenko leads the Russian delegation to an international conference on fight against bird flu held in Beijing. “Our country, which chairs the G-8 summit in 2006, will make its contribution to a global system of fight against bird flu,” the chief sanitary doctor stressed. “Intensive consultations are currently in progress with experts from the G-8 states with an aim to coordinate our positions in that sphere,” he stressed. According to Onishchenko, “Russia intends to earmark before 2009 several dozen million dollars for fight against the H5N1 virus”. “The bulk of the sum is intended for the development of anti-epidemiological services in our country, whose activity will be influencing the situation in Eastern Europe as well as in Central Asia,” the medic said. He explained it by the fact that “all birds from Africa, Asia and Middle East are returning to Siberia, and then fly back”. “No country can stay away from that problem by closing its borders. The problem must be solved globally through the efforts of all countries,” Onishchenko emphasized.
