The temperature in the Moscow Region may plunge below minus 37 degrees Celsius
The temperature in the Moscow Region may plunge below minus 37 degrees Celsius (-35 degrees Fahrenheit) Wednesday morning, Russia's main weather forecasting service said Tuesday. According to the service, the temperature in downtown Moscow would fluctuate between minus 32 and 34 degrees Celsius. Earlier, weather forecasters said the cold spell, which hit Moscow Monday night, was expected to last several days, with temperatures dropping to as low as minus 34 degrees Celsius by the end of the week. With the average for Moscow temperatures in January standing between -16 and -9 degrees Celsius, the atypical frosts this January have already claimed the lives of two people in Moscow who froze to death. The sudden freeze came on the back of several days of relatively mild weather, with temperatures hovering only just below zero degrees Celsius. Unified Energy System CEO Anatoly Chubais said earlier that heat supplies to some consumers might be restricted if the weather grew too cold, but later added that this would not affect residential buildings. Moscow regional utility Mosenergo also said in a statement that it had stocked up on fuel and was well equipped to deal with the dip in temperatures.
