Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev has described as optimal Russia’s position at negotiations on its admission to the World Trade Organization
Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev has described as optimal Russia’s position at negotiations on its admission to the World Trade Organization. He made a statement to this effect to reporters after a meeting of the inter-departmental working group for the priority national project Development of the Agro-Industrial Complex on Wednesday. He said as long as it remained outside the WTO, Russia would be unable to address the Western countries, first and foremost the European Union member-states, with any complaints about their anti-liberal actions and abuse of market economy principles. Losses sustained as a result are considerable, he said. “Honestly speaking, I am looking forward to the day when we shall be able to enter into a discussion of these problems with the European countries,” he said. Earlier, in his statement at the East-West agricultural conference in Berlin Gordeyev strongly criticized the procedure of admission to the WTO. “It is for eleven years now that Russia has negotiated its accession to the WTO. Experience shows that the WTO admission agreement far from perfect,” Gordeyev said. In this context he said that “Russia’s is one of the most liberal policies in the world.” Gordeyev told his European counterparts there were two major concerns for Russia - “fair trade and globalization.” “In my view, the possibility of fair trade in the context of globalization runs counter to the fundamental laws of philosophy,” he said. The Russian agriculture minister sees an urgent need for jointly forecasting threats and pursuing coordinated policies. “Presenting a common front against such threats as bird flu is vital, of course,” Gordeyev said.
