Russia's ladies continued their progress at the fifth day of the Australian Open
Russia's ladies continued their progress at the fifth day of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam series event of the 2006 tennis season. Four out of five playing in the third round of ladies' singles advanced to the next stage. World no.1 Maria Sharapova, seeded four, cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Croatian Jelena Kostanic, and will play the winner of the match between U.S. Serena Williams, seeded 13, and Daniela Hantuchova, seeded 17, in the next round. Former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, seeded 14, defeated Italian Mara Santangelo, 6-3, 6-1, and sixth seed Nadezhda Petrova beat Italy's Maria Elena Camerin, 6-1, 6-2. Meanwhile Yelena Vesnina fought hard to edge out Ukrainian Olga Savchuk, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Maria Kirilenko, seeded 25, had a good chance for a surprise victory over world no.1 and top seed for the tournament American Lindsay Davenport. She won the second set, but finally lost 4-6, 6-4, 2-6. Davenport will now take on Kuznetsova in what promises to be a mouthwatering fourth round clash.
