The European Union and Russia are launching a new 3-million euro project to support the latter's accession to the World Trade Organization
The European Union and Russia are launching a new 3-million euro project to support the latter's accession to the World Trade Organization, the acting head of the European Commission's delegation in Moscow said Friday. John Richards said Russian needed to take a number of legislative measures to join the organization. Therefore, the project covers legal reform in Russia, and efforts to inform Russian businessmen and other interested parties about the advantages of the WTO membership and the regulations of this organization. It will be implemented until 2007 by a consortium of EU and Russian partners. Richards said a number of similar projects had already been pursued in Russia. Konstantinos Adamantopoulos, the chief of a British law firm heading the consortium, said the project would be implemented in three spheres: legislation, business and management. He said the project would include seminars and training programs in Moscow and Russia's regions to prepare managers, businessmen and academics for the changes that will accompany Russia's accession to the WTO and to inform Russian society about how the organization works. Adamantopoulos said he hoped Russia would join the WTO before the project was completed. Maxim Medvedkov, a senior official from the country's Economic Development and Trade Ministry, said earlier Froiday that Russia was planning to complete bilateral WTO talks with the United States, Australia, Switzerland and Columbia within two months' time.
