The LOMO enterprise has made the main 1.65-metre mirror for Russia's first special infrared telescope AZT-33IK
The LOMO (Leningrad Optical Mechanical Association) enterprise, based in St.Petersburg, has made the main 1.65-metre mirror for Russia's first special infrared telescope AZT-33IK, the press service of the Russian Conventional Arms Agency said on Thursday. "The main mirror will be the last piece of the new telescope. It is a high-precision optical instrument meeting the modern requirements", the press service said. The mirror has to be wide-aperture and have a complex geometry. In making it, the St.Petersburg opticians had to be very innovative. "A special anti- deformations frame of the mirror was made. It is 150 millimetres thick and the 600-kilogram instrument could sag under its own weight", the press service explained. The AZT-33IK telescope has been made on order from the Russian Academy of Sciences. In July 2003 all works were completed. The LOMO is the only Russian works capable of developing and manufacturing professional telescopes. The unique optical instrument will be put into service in space in mid-2004.
