The Russian Council of Muftis denounces the actions of militant Islamists
The Russian Council of Muftis denounces the actions of militant Islamists, who started massive unrest under the pretext of protesting against the publication of caricatures of Prophet Mohammad, and who set on fire European diplomatic missions in a number of Arab countries. “Those actions of radical Islamists cannot be justified in any way. Massive unrest and outrages may create an explosive situation, dangerous for the whole of the civilisation. We favour a peaceful dialogue and the settlement of emerging problems by civilised methods,” Damir Gizatullin, First Deputy Chairman of the Russian Council of Muftis, told Itar-Tass on Monday. According to his information, Ravil Gainutdin, head of the Russian Council of Muftis, who leaves for abroad on Monday, will “explain the stand of Russian Muslims on the problem and will urge his colleagues to settle the problem by civilised methods.” At the same time, commenting on the caricatures of Prophet Mohammad, published by some European mass media organs, Gizatullin said that “their authors lack inner censorship and a feeling of responsibility for what they do.” “Such painters do not realise that there are radically-minded people among Muslims, the same as everywhere, who further their own aims,” he said. Radical Islamists staged massive unrest and outrages in Lebanon, Indonesia and Syria, where they burned the Danish and Norwegian embassies. An office of the European Union was destroyed in the Palestinian Autonomy. The police arrested some 250 instigators of the unrest in Beirut alone. The unrest swept the Lebanese capital on Sunday. It has been established that there were Syrians and Palestinians among them. One demonstrator died and another 22 were taken to hospital as a result of the clashes. Nineteen policemen and soldiers were injured. Militant Islamists staged a pogrom in Ashrafia – the Christian district of Beirut. The Lebanese government denounced “the conspiracy, aimed at kindling inter-ethnic strife in the country.”
