Officers of the Chechen Interior Ministry have destroyed a major base of militants, the total area of which was equal to 100 square metres, near the mountain village of Zumsoi in Chechnya’s south, Itar-Tass learnt at the republican Interior Ministry on Monday. “When police approached the shelter, a gunman who was guarding the base opened fire on them. The gunman was killed in the shootout,” representatives of the Interior Ministry said. The base was a well-reinforced shelter with a water supply system and a reserve of foodstuffs. There were two sub-machine-guns, over 2,000 of cartridges, 11 grenades, 13 projectiles for a grenade launcher, eight TNT blocks and several homemade explosive devices weighing about 20 kilograms each in the shelter. According to the available information, militants of Tarkhan Gaziyev, who prepared the base, intended to stage several major acts of sabotage and terrorism.
