Finance ministers of the elite club of the world's richest nations will meet in April to determine a pilot project aimed to combat infectious diseases, the Russian finance minister said Monday. "The pilot project to use the funds [allocated for the purpose] will be possibly determined," Alexei Kudrin said, adding it was particularly important for Africa, where such diseases claimed millions of lives every year. At their meeting in Moscow Saturday, some finance ministers of the Group of Eight (G8) supported a Russian initiative to expand the network of centers and laboratories monitoring infectious diseases, the minister said. According to Kudrin, the proposal is now under consideration in the World Health Organization. "The G8 finance ministers discussed possible additional economic measures from governments to support laboratories and set up a substantial reserve of vaccines to combat major diseases," the minister said
