Yuri Trutnev and Zhou Shengxian have signed a memorandum on the joint monitoring of trans-border water quality
Russian Natural Resources Minister Yuri Trutnev and head of the Chinese State Environmental Protection Administration Zhou Shengxian have signed a memorandum on the joint monitoring of trans-border water quality, a source at the Russian Natural Resources Ministry told Itar-Tass on Tuesday. “The memorandum has been signed for the period of five years for protecting the quality of water in the trans-border rivers Amur, Ussuri, Arguni, Razdolnaya and the Lake Khanka,” the source said. In the first year the sides will draft and approve a water monitoring plan. The document will define sediment and water monitoring techniques, stipulate laboratory analysis of water samples and the exchange of information. From now on Russia will regularly receive information about the pollution of trans-border rivers and ponds on the Chinese territory. The information about toxic leaks in China has been classified until recently, the source said. For instance, a leak from the Jilin chemical plant happened on November 13, 2005, and Russia was informed about it only by the end of last November.
