The rescue operation on the site where a covered market collapsed in eastern Moscow is completed
The rescue operation on the site where a covered market collapsed in eastern Moscow is completed, Emergencies Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova told Itar-Tass on Thursday. At least of 50 people were killed and 29 people injured during the tragedy. Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov said the main version of the tragedy is that the covered market in eastern Moscow collapsed on Thursday under the weight of snow on its roof. Luzhkov, who went to the scene of the disaster, told journalists, “The first version is that the market collapsed under the weight of snow on its roof.” At the same time, the Moscow mayor believes that it is necessary to study other versions “in order to rule out a possibility of a terrorist act or other willful actions.” In his words, the work on the spot will continue in the evening and at night. “The work is very difficult because part of the roof has collapsed and the rest of it with powerful elements hangs and poses a threat if adequate decisions are taken.” He noted that the part of the roof, which is not collapsed, is hanging over the rest of the complex. “We found one of the methods to solve the problem,” Luzhkov said. In addition to rescue workers of the Emergencies Ministry, four brigades of major construction companies work on the scene. Luzhkov signed a resolution to render aid to the victims of the tragedy. “I’ve just signed a document on aid to the victims,” the mayor said. Earlier, Luzhkov said Moscow authorities will pay 100,000 rouble compensations to families of the victims. Those who were hospitalised will be paid 50,000 roubles and those who received medical assistance will be paid 5,000-10,000 roubles. At a ceremony marking Motherland’s Defender Day, President Vladimir Putin called for a “painstaking investigation” to pin down why the building, built in the 1970s, collapsed. The architect who designed the covered market said in a radio interview that its flat roof had not been designed to bear a heavy load of snow. “It seems there was a lot of snow, and nobody removed it,” Nodar Kancheli was quoted by Itar-Tass news agency as telling a Moscow radio station. “Nobody was allowed to get on to the roof to clear it off.”
