A fairytake train brought the characters of folk tales and life-size dolls to St. Basil river slope in downtown Moscow on Monday to usher in a Pancake Week festival in the Russiancapital
A festival town has been pitched up near the Kremlin walls over there for guests to be able to participate in this folk celebration in accordance with Russian traditions. Already on the very first day of the festival, although it was a working-day, the town attracted about 500 people. There are more than ten cafes that offer pancakes with filling. Prices range from 30 roubles for pancakes with preserves to 130 roubles for those with red and black caviar. The organisers suggest that guests take part in various quiz shows and contests, and measure strength in Russian folk amusements suchs as a tug-of-war and leaping in sacks. The seven-day merrymaking will be accompanied with performances by Russian folk song ensembles. Competitions between pancake makers from Russia and Ukraine are to be held there on Thursday and Sunday, and a colourful carnival procession is to march from Triumph Square to the St Basil rive slope. Festival organisers have told Itar-Tass that the boundaries of the Pancake Week festival town "are reliably secured against ill-wishers". The territory is fenced off by barriers and is guarded by about 170 members of personnel of law enforcement agencies and Interior-Ministry troopers, with metal detectorts set up at the entrance to the festival town
