Russia will grant Aslan Abashidze political asylum
Russia will grant Aslan Abashidze political asylum, Imedi television reported today, citing Georgy Xaindrava, Georgia's minister for conflict settlement. Xaindraya said he had been told by Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili that Saakashvili had spoken by telephone with Russian President Vlaldimir Putin and that Putin confirmed Russia's readiness to grant political asylum to Abashidze. It is now expected that Abashidze will shortly go on television with an official announcement. Meanwhile, at the Georgian-Adjarian border, talks are underway between Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Zhvaniya and Adjaria's Interior Minister Jemal Gogitidze and David Xalvash, chief of Abashidze's personal security force. According to early reports, Abashidze and those closest to him would be assured of their personal safety. Before the talks began, Zhvaniya declared: 'The epic of Aslan Abashidze is over. Now we are talking about how to wind all this up peacefully.'
